How to Make a DIY Rustic American Flag

This post is inspired by Kalebs Woodworks' "DIY Wood Ideas - Rustic Flag" video.

We’ll walk you through the steps to create your own beautiful, rustic American flag from reclaimed wood.. This project is perfect for anyone who loves woodworking and wants to create a unique piece of patriotic art.

What You’ll Need:

  • Reclaimed wood (1x3x36 inch pieces are a great starting point)
  • Saw
  • Sander and sandpaper (60, 80, 150, and 220 grit)
  • Brad nailer and 5/8 inch brad nails
  • Wood glue (Titebond III is a good option)
  • Carving tools (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Prepare the Wood: Start by ripping your reclaimed wood pieces into 1.5-inch-wide stripes. This will give you the perfect size for the stripes of your flag.
  • Cut and Sand: Cut three pieces of wood to 14.75 inches for the union (the blue part with the stars). Don’t sand these pieces. For the stripes, sand them with progressively finer grits of sandpaper, starting with 60 and working your way up to 220. This will give the white stripes a smooth finish.
  • Assemble the Flag: Now it’s time to put it all together! Use wood glue and a brad nailer to attach the stripes to four backer strips. This will keep your flag flat and stable.
  • Finishing Touches: For a truly authentic look, carve stars and the year “1776” into the union of your flag.
